With Milva we took the morning bus to El Calafate, crossing once more the border to get into Argentina. It was again a beauty of a ride, with mountains appearing in the distance, wide pampa landscapes.

El Calafate is the town from which you can go visit the Perito Moreno glacier, and that was the reason we were there. We spent the afternoon organizing for the next couple of days, planning to rent a car once Lionel would catch up with us, to go and see the Perito Moreno at our own pace instead of taking a tour.

French people we had met in Puerto Natales had told us about an expensive (around 60 usd) but unique thing to do and see: the boat cruise to glaciars Upsala and Spegazzini. As they had talked about it, I was ready to pay, provided the weather could be good. We decided that we would go in the morning and show up at 7 at the office, if the weather looked good enough.

Next day:

The internet connexion in El Calafate was terrible, and we did not manage to communicate well with Lionel. Still, after the boat cruise on the next day, we found out that he had landed completely by chance in the same hostel, and in the same dorm as us.

We went to rent a car for the next day trip to Glaciar Perito Moreno, and we enrolled Meg, and American girl who agreed to share the ride with us.

In the evening I also went to buy a new backpack: I had stupidly left from Punta Arenas without buying one, while it was clear that I needed a large capacity bag. But it had taken me time to slowly get rid of lots of stuff, getting down to a 45L backpack, and it was a pain to think I would have to travel again with a big pack.
I found a 70L backpack quite cheap, I was lucky. Old style, with lots of pockets of square shape, I love it. See the picture to compare the new bag and the old bag... bouuuuuh!

I also finally got rid of my burmese umbrella, all rusted and destroyed, and it was awful anyway and people were even taking picture of me when I used it!

Hello,

I am a fellow traveler in need of some advice and found your blog through a Google search. I'm currently planning a trip to the south of Chile and want to make a side trip to El Calafate but have been having some trouble finding bus companies and schedules to go from Puerto Natales to El Calafate. I was wondering if you had any advice on this. Which company did you use? Thank you so much and if you have any info for me my email address is katy.ionis@gmail.com
