In the morning I drove to the suburbs of adelaide, to pick-up Karen in West Lakes. We had been traveling together to Kakadu, near Darwin, before I started driving along the west coast. She had been traveling down the center of Oz, via Alice Springs and Uluru, to Adelaide. She had just spent a week with some relatives of hers, who had emigrated to Oz more than 50 years ago. They seemed to be very nice people, and Karen had a serious heartpinch at leaving them.
But she was happy to be back on the road, and I was definitely happy to have someone to drive me around, cause after 3500km in 3 days, I was getting really sick of it. We drove along the coast, which was great but windy.
In the end of afternoon we reached Mt Gambier, a town on the flanks of 3 craters, 2 of which had blue lakes: the water from the aquifer communicates with the craters, making them a natural water source. Their water is blue, somehow maybe because of the ashes and volcanic rocks, or I don't know. Anyway the weather was bad, very cloudy and grey, and the water was still a deep blue, that was quite impressive.
We went to the caravanpark and stayed there for the night, cooking ourselves a nice meal and meeting aussies and brit travellers.
The next day we drove a few hours before stopping at a natural reserve, where we took a walk and got to see emus and emus chicks, but also lazy koalas, sleeping in the eucalyptus trees. We even spotted an euchidnia a rare sight in the wild, looking like a sort of hedgehog with a long nose. Then we drove along the great ocean road, where we had a bit of sun for a couple of hours: magnificient.
Later we had another walk to some cascades, which were just a stream of water due to the severe draught in Oz. We also stopped at some beaches and viewpoints.
We reached Melbourne in the evening, a big city with lots of lights, somehow reassuring after all this time out there nowhere.We did not find a bed easily, as the Mel Cup was held on the next day, and we struggled to park the car as well. After dinner and a shower, although I was really completely exhausted, I told Lisa to pick me up, and we went for a drink out. I had met with Lisa in Vietnam, and she had invited me to visit her in Melbourne.
