there I will be one day
younger... and if I can't
get used to the idea,
maybe I'll just have to do

So, I got up at noon, I was ill (sore throat and a bad cough), and the weather was not good. We had planned a good ride with Jennie, and I feared that it would be jeopardised... she asked me if I wanted to ride: Of course I wanted! So I had breakfast, Ulzii prepared the horses, and we left the camp.
After a few kilometers, Jennie's horse started limping, and it was getting worse. We stopped at the neighbouring ger, where stepperiders usually hire horses when they have several customers. Jennie swapped her horse for another one, and we continued our ride.
It ended up being a very nice ride, as the weather got better. After a couple of hours, we found a grassy place, so we stopped to picnic while the horses ate all they could. We rode for a few more hours. In total, we covered 25km, and I was surprised that we did in such a short time. We went over hills, and had magnificient landscapes. That gave me a glimpse of things to come, and I am definitely looking forward to it! Also a good teaching: when we retrieved Jennie's horse, he was not limping anymore... that confirmed what Jennie thought in the morning: he faked his limping so as not to go for the ride! But I have to say that his fake limping is really good!
Jennie continued to give me precious information and to tell me what to expect in Mongolia. In the evening we went over the equipment that I should buy at Ulanbataar Market. She wrote the cyrillic translations for me, and also gave me an idea of the prices. Later that evening, we opened some beers and Ulzii and Jennie taught me the popular mongolian card game (I don't remember the name), which will be crucial in socializing with mongolians while not speaking mongolian. She told me it took her months to understand it, as nobody could explain her the rules in english!
I went to bed with extra covers, and this time I did not awake in the middle of night, although it was really cold. In the morning, Ulzii taught me the mongolian knots, so as to be able to tie the horse to whatever would be available. I bought a pack saddle from Jennie, as well as 1:500000 maps of the region I planned to visit. Jennie gave me contacts in Tsetserleg, to who I could ask for buying horses.
Then Toloo came to take back to Ulanbataar. He was accompanied by his wife and their grandson, and before leaving they all agreed to be on the picture for me.

Toloo also brought with him the deel that he had had made for me: dark green with an orange belt.
I have been weak on pictures... I didn't even take one inside the gers!!! But I will take care of that next time, I promiss.
Next stop is Ulanbataar for a couple of days, to prepare my horse-riding trip and wait until my cough goes away.

Hi, your journey sounds intersting as I'm going to the same area next summer. I was wondering if you had any ideas of what I could do out there? eg what did find was your most exciting moment whilst in and around UB.
I was thinking about going up Tsetseegun but if there's anything you'd recomend please let me know on andywallace3@aol.com

GPS coordinates (reply) Jun 1, 2006 23:17 EST by peacefrog
Stepperiders were at N 47 37.013 E 106 47.395, and we went some 10km south of the camp, in the hills.
I will soon go to Tsetserleg: N 49 31.959 E97 46.011
And ride 200km northwest from there to the big lake surrounded by volcanoes.
