We´re nearing the end of October now and also getting closer to the end of our stay in Barcelona. The clock is turned back, and nobody goes in the street at night without long sleeves and pants... well, except me, the dumb American. "This isn´t California" says Flors seeing me in a black skirt without stockings. We´re starting to see castañas (chestnuts) and boniatos (sweet potato) in the streets, and bakeries are selling Panallets, small round cookies covered with pine nuts.
This Wednesday night, the night before November 1st, or All Saints´ Day, is the night to do a castañada, or roast chestnuts, with your family. It´s time to cuddle up in bed as it gets colder now. Perfect timing because Josep Maria just arrived. It´s a sweet reunion and a mix of two worlds for both of us. Tonight we´ll go to Calle Petritxol to eat churros with hot, melted chocolate. Yumm.
The fires in California are almost under control now. Everyone calls and asks my in-laws about their son in San Diego and the fires there. A Catalan family whose house survived and who stayed at our condo in San Diego for a few days when they were evacuated is in the Diario de Sabadell newspaper which we bought yesterday. They are also in a video on CNN (google "cnn galmes") In a few days we leave for Italy, I´m getting nostalgic now for my family and the life I´ve lived here. Bye Catalunya. More thumbnails ...
