April 30th, Wolf Run State Park near Caldwell, OH
A beautiful ride today, mostly on interstates, west through the Maryland panhandle and northern West Virginia. Just a beautiful mix of spring woods and green green fields, jagged hills and narrow valleys. We stopped in the college town of Frostburg (where I posted the last blog from a little cafe that we stopped at for coffee and stayed for lunch.) At one point in WV we decided to shun-pike, but the state route we started up was SO windy and narrow (and we would have been on it for 30 miles) that we gave up and backtracked to the highway
We have decided to have a more leisurely time in southern Ohio and Kentucky, and are not going to try to take in any of southern Indiana. We had wanted to go to Bloomington, where Skip and Marilyn met while at grad school, but we'll do that another time. Ridge sent us his daughter's phone number to contact when we are in Berea in a couple of days. We will definitely do that. We are hoping that the weather will improve before long - it has been pretty grey and wet so far.
Campgrounds yield some interesting conversations - this evening with a guy from Virginia who is by himself in a HUGE rig, towing a jeep, with a bike - he is retired and his wife is still working so he takes off on these jaunts including weekend "Samborees" which are events sponsored by Sam's Clubs where RV owners gather with entertainment and I don't know exactly what else. (I can't tell you what Sam's Clubs ARE either, and I don't have internet access at the moment, so you'll have to look it up yourself. I have heard of them, but that is about as far as it goes.) Everyone is very friendly, all the park staff and the campers, and everyone loves to chat. As do we! It seems a lot of campgrounds have "pet friendly" areas which would probably be a bit of a zoo in the summer, but at the moment, no problem.
I think that's it for this installment.....
