Saturday July 11, 2009 - Wroclaw, Poland

Finally have a chance to update the travel blog after a busy few days since leaving Krakow on Saturday morning. We headed west to Wroclaw across the beautiful countryside of southern Poland and arrived at the Art Hotel which is located downtown in Wroclaw, near the central square, about two blocks away. It is also about two blocks from Wroclaw University, where we have our lectures and some of the presentations.

Upon arrival, as is the custom with our hosts in Poland, we dashed off to the university and had lunch at a local restaurant. It is somewhat amusing at times as we are seated in a large group while others at the restaurant trying to get their meals look at us with idle curiosity. I often see little children looking at us trying to figure out who all those strange people are and why they don't speak Polish. Our hosts have commented on this when we have asked, and it is interesting to be in a place like Poland where we don’t speak the language fluently.

On Saturday we had a lecture at Wroclaw University, which was hosted by the Vice Rector (like a dean of the college), Professor Adam Jezierski. He gave us a tour of the mathematics building, and our other guide, Anya, gave us a tour of the sights and collections at the university. Professor Jezierski also treated us to a piano concert, which was pretty cool. He can really play that piano. Dinner was group style again at the hotel restaurant, which has been outstanding at every meal. I have attached some photos of Wroclaw and the views of the city.
