Arrived in Krakow in the south of Poland today after a five-hour bus ride. Poland is a beautiful country, and driving on the highways is a lot of fun. I appreciate the scenery, flat and lots of agriculture for about 2.5 hours, then the terrain starts to turn hilly and is spectacular. Never realized how rural Poland is until one drives across it.

We are camped out in the Campanile Hotel, a beautiful little place about two blocks from the main square in Krakow. We had lunch upon arrival and then went on a two-hour walking tour of Krakow, including St. Mary's Cathedral. Very impressive place.

After the tour, we all took cabs from the hotel to the National Museum for a reception hosted by the United States Ambassador to Poland, the Honorable Victor Ashe, an appointee by former President George Bush. When going through the receiving line, he asked me if I knew the former Governor William Scranton, and then handed me his business card. All of the Fulbright participants in my group then went to tour the three floors of art exhibits featuring many prominent American artists, namely Andy Warhol and a few others I don’t recall. There were a few Americans there, as this was the date we were celebrating Independence Day in Poland, about 800 guests there, mostly Polish.

Tomorrow begins our Krakow and southern Poland portion of the Fulbright journey. Should be good, headed to Zakopane for the weekend in the Tatras mountains region, then a river raft ride and a few other activities, should be good.
