(Pictures of my first day at UL, the first day of orientation, Riddler's Bar and The Icon Night Club, and Ultimate Frisbee Irish-style)
Sorry I've been absent from posting for almost two weeks. I've been keeping busy and enjoying my time in Ireland. A lot has happened since Sixmilebridge:
I moved in to my campus accommodations (i.e. dorm room) on Sunday, Feb. 4. I was just about the only person on campus, and I used that fact as an opportunity to take some great pictures of the campus and my new home, Plassey Village. It really is a beautiful area, and I'm so happy that my first days here were blessed by sunshine and nice weather (that would not last). I also met one of my, temporary, roommates, Becky Kolpak from Pennsylvania. I say temporary because, after a freezing cold night and a communal shower, she opted for the en-suite (i.e. shower and bathroom in your bedroom) accommodations at Thomond Village. But I don't mind it being a little cold if I can save €200 (about $270). Anyway, it was a nice day, a cold night, and an interesting introduction to my new school.
Over the next week, I got internet in my room, opened an Irish bank account, read about and explored parts of Limerick, and got overall acquainted with this strange new city. Limerick has a wonderful town centre, though, full of great little shops and stores to meet common shopping needs. The most interesting shop I've found so far is a small book shop called the Celtic Bookstore, on O'Connell street. One of my other roommates, this one a permanent fixture, arrived, as well as the other two, both Irish girls, but they didn't come until the Sunday prior to school starting. Philip, a German from Hof (near the Czech border) has proven to be a great companion and roommate, and we've had many long conversations over bottles of beer. Jackie and Margaret (Mags) are both very nice, but on a bit of a different level than Philip and me. Perhaps that's because they are just starting out at university and we're old farts finishing up our college experience, but we all get along and ours is a good house in which to live.
I also met many friends, mostly international students like myself, and enjoyed some of the clubs and bars around town. Most notably, we joined the University of Limerick Ultimate Frisbee Club for a night at a bar and a nightclub (which you can see in the pictures linked to above). That was a very fun night, and a lot of it was spent socializing with, and learning about, the other international students. We also had the opportunity to partake in "Irish-style" Ultimate Frisbee (check out the pictures to see what I mean). This whole experience has definitely changed my understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural communication.
And, of course, classes began. But I'll talk more about that later. Slán go foill (bye for now).
