What does Crudo mean...?

They say that the Andes stays with you - though I'm not sure it is supposed to be in the form of horrendous sun and wind burn. Paul's face basically got a chemical peel 'a-la-naturale'. As a result, the first day or so in Valdivia was a bit of a write off.

Valdivia is a relatively small but picturesque town at the confluence of two rivers about 15km from the coast. While the town and the riverfront is quaint, there is a full size submarine in the river - why? Not sure.

On our first day exploring the town we headed to the river front markets. At the markets there is great local produce and the seafood is freshly prepared but what makes the place unique is that the market also doubles as sea lion nirvana!
Each day the sea lions sit at the market edge and are fed as much salmon scraps as they can handle before a dip in the water and returning to the nearby pontoon to lie in the sun (a little like Club Med). While all the sea lions are separated from the market by a metal fence, there was one rogue within the stalls of the market - we still have no idea how it got there - but it means you can get very close and confirm that they are in fact huge!

After a bit of wandering through the markets, Paul being interviewed about perceptions of the effectiveness of various conservation and reforestation techniques (what is it with us and interviews), Jade making friends with four puppy's and inadvertently letting them all out of their house into the street and having to reheard them back inside, we went on a boat cruise up the river to visit one of the national parks as well as a couple of historical sites.

The following day we intended to head to one of the coastal national parks but after a few logistical miscalculations we got stuck, I mean "decided", to cut our trip short and instead visit one of the Spanish forts in Niebla. After the picturesque ferry ride back from Niebla, we took some advice from the day before and went to the Kunstmann Brewery (an unfortunate name yes but great beer). We also decided to order the recommendation, a beer degustation and a dish called Crudo (local speciality) to go with. The beer came out and all was well - 10 varieties in oversized shot glasses - and then came the Crudo. It turns out that Crudo is a side of onions, pickled chilli and mayonnaise accompanying the main game - sliced white bread spread with raw (and I mean raw) minced beef. For the first 5 minutes between fits of laughter it became apparent that there was no stove or mini grill coming - that was it. Out of respect, through a will of steel and with some regular table condiment assistance, Jade ate half and Paul finished the serve all the while laughing and trying to choke back the repercussions. A tip for new players - "Crudo" in Spanish means raw.

Hi guys
Up close and personal with fish breath sea lions yeah! Eating raw meat!! 1st degree burns on your face! Certainly some stories to tell! keep up the blog. Keep having a great time! Love A Sue

It's true that there hasn't been a dull moment so far! We're pleased to say that on our second and third trips into the Patagonia wilderness we've avoided the first degree burns but more to follow on this in our next post!
