7th - 10th June 2008
We arrived in Buenos Aires at about 6pm on the 7th. The hostel we stayed in was very comfortable and would highly recommend it to anyone although there was no kitchen facilities so you couldn't cook for yourself but to be fair with 3 nights in Buenos Aires we were quite happy to stretch our budget and eat out :-) the bar at the hostel wa dead until about 3am on the first night when it packed right out!
On Sunday we went to Plaza de Mayo which is where the Pink House stands or the Casa Rosada which is where Evita spoke from. Then we walked to the market on Defensa street where I got some good bargains including a couple of scarfs for the collection, a leather book to use as a scrap book and a bracelet and ring set which were attached together by a chain, that Bushy bought for me. For lunch we ate at what we thought to be a cute little bar on Defensa called Vintage Bar but turned out to be the nicest restaurant we'd eaten at so far on our travels (in my opinion anyway) afterwards we went up to Plaza Derrego and found a great little bar called El Balcon where we watched a little show over a drink which mainly consisted of a couple of guys on guitars and a couple of dancers, I really enjoyed it, it was the kind of place I'd imagined going to in Buenos Aires for a few drinks. Once that was over we sat on one of the many tiny balconies that looked over the square and watched the locals all doing the tango together it was great a completely different night out to any I'd ever had back home.
The following day we went for a nice little walk round a graveyard, Cementerio La Recoleta, sounds strange perhaps but it was very surreal it was like a city of mini chapels/shrines to family members, some new or at least well looked after whilst others were old and long forgotten crumbling away and weather worn, it was a little creepy looking into these tombs and seeing coffins stacked on top of one another. But incase your starting to worry slightly about our sanity lol! the main reason we went is because it is where Evita is buried or Maria Eva Duarte de Peron. That evening we booked ourselves into a Tango show, El Querandi, for 250 pesos each which included, a 3 course dinner, a bottle of wine, all beers and soft drinks, coffee, plus the show which turned out to be like a history of Tango style of show. It was all done really well and the dancers and musicians were fantastic, definitely worth the 40 odd quid which it worked out to be worth each!
Decided to try out these overnight coaches which looked quite good and good value for money too. Our coach was on Tuesday at 3pm with a company called Via Bariloche which arrived in Bariloche at about 10am the next day. It was a long old haul but since it was overnight it wasn't so bad, plus the seats reclined right back to a laying down position, cool!
