This morning we said goodbye to the Hedlund's. Marla and the girls headed off to work and school and then we finished off packing the car, said our last goodbyes to John and headed south to the Golden Gate Bridge, our last view of San Francisco before heading down to join the California 1 south road. We wove our way down the coast along some breathtaking views. It was a very cold blustery day and it was freezing when we stopped and got out. We drove to Monterey Bay where we parked and walked around Fisherman's Wharf. Rorke was trying to stand on a bollard and was blown right off. We were thinking about going whale watching but due to the windy conditions most of the boats going out were cancelled. Only 1 was still going out and they were charging a small fortune!! We saw sea lions at the wharf and pelicans hanging around waiting for off cuts from some fishing trips. We then continued down the coast unfortunately we missed the 17 mile stretch but did drive past Carmel down the coast. Just south of Big Sur we saw beaches covered with elephant seals. We stopped at Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery and really took in the view. Fascinating and as the kids said pretty smelly. We finally stopped at Pismo Beach for the night. We got a fantastic last minute room booking and this was by far the biggest hotel room we have stayed in this trip. We went into Pismo beach and saw the end of the sunset before having a meal at Cool Cat's diner. Great meal, just I am still not feeling fantastic. Back to the hotel and bed.
