Growing up in a family whose middle name might have been "traveller", due to my father's business connection in the Airline industry, was the cat's meow, especially as a young teenager, and memories of some of those first trips still stick in my mind. Growing up in Holland, first in Brunssum (near Maastricht), then Amsterdam and finally Aalsmeer (think world's largest flower auction, where the main form of transport are not your feet but bikes), was not too bad at all, and actually worth a book full of stories. With a scant 3 hour drive North to South and 2 1/2 hours East to West, you are literally out of the Netherlands, and although its official name is not Holland but the Netherlands- Nederland (meaning the low lands), it is the province (one of 12) in which Amsterdam is located, that the misconcepted name Holland is derived from. Being centrally located, with just hours to another culture and world, allowed for easy and quick trips to some of the most intriguing cities and countries in Europe, whether we drove, flew or took the train, we discovered every nook and cranny, and I am blessed to have become a globetrotter at such an early age.
