Another one of our favorite ethnic restaurants, although basic in atmosphere and decor is India Grill, off 3 St North and 1 Avenue in downtown St. Pete. Lunch consists of a 10-12 item buffet for under $9 and although no ultra exciting dishes stand out it is the conventional items that are consistently good and worth the trip.
Perennial classics like naan, butter chicken and tandoori chicken are always in a chafer, but when a curry or the miniature meatballs, that pop with flavor, are featured, we feel that we are getting our money's worth. We have found that many restaurants slight the vegetarians and so even in our restaurant we do all possible to not only accommodate these guests, but Jose Luis will attempt to create dishes that spur them on to return time and time again. Vegetarians can rejoice at India Grill, with usually 3 to 4 items appealing to their palate, with my favorites being the Daal (lentils), creamed spinach with cheese cubes, legumes, garbanzo beans spiced up with turmeric or curry and the green beans with potatoes. Regrettably I have to relinquish any thoughts of eating their cauliflower and onion dish or any of the other featured cruciferous veggies, as much as I might like them, they don't like me.
A medley of 4 sauces to notch up your meal usually includes a sweet and tangy tamarind sauce, a surprisingly fresh tasting mint sauce with a hint of heat, the ubiquitous mango chutney and my favorite a fresh cooling raita (yoghurt, cucumber, onion).
If you are not yet sated save a little room for a spoon or two of the creamy rice pudding with a hint of cinnamon or the mango pudding, the perfect antidote to all the spices and herbs that you have consumed after visiting the buffet 3 or 4 times.
