Arrive in Lima off another two hour flight and am pretty bowled over when the taxi driver tells me its a city of ten million. I stay out in the middle class Miraflores suburb which, with its shopping centres, chain stores, decent restaurants and leafy central park dedicated to JFK, would sit comfortably in any prosperous American city. Take a stroll around the city centre and catch the somewhat comical changing of the guard at midday on the Plaza de Armas. The elaborately dressed soldiers with march curiously to music vaguely resembling simon and garfunkel numbers. Get back to my Irish owned hostel in good time for the St Patrick´s day celebrations. With Guinness, stew, Father Ted and plenty of well oiled Paddies, its a decent night.
