Bogota like Medellin has an air of prosperity about it and, as a result of its many libraries and universities is known as "the Athens of South America". Took a trip out to see the fascinating Cathedral del Sal built deep inside the Zipaquira salt mines, finished by miners only in 1995. The higher altitude is immediately noticable, having had to stick on my jacket for the first time since Christmas Day in San Cristobal de las Casas. Another highlight was the Museo del Oro, the largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold in the world.
