We took a break from schoolwork and took a $12 tuk-tuk ride north of Patong to Surin Beach for the day. You can rent a cushioned chair and beach umbrella $3 for the day. Great! I walked along the shops and got a haircut for $9. It was just like Supercuts, she just sprayed my hair with water, (no wash) then cut it. I was disappointed after China. I was expecting a wash at least, but I was hoping for a massage! Ah well.
The water was warm and clear. The kids enjoyed playing in the waves, collecting crabs in the sand, and building sand castles. Paul "snorkeled" (looked underwater with his goggles on) with the kids and they saw some colorful small fish, but no coral, so not a lot of variety. Another pleasant, pleasant day. How can you beat a day at the beach?

Today we went to the beach
Jacob's journal:
Yesterday we took a 20 minute “tuk tuk” (a large cross between a car and tuk tuk,) to an awesome beach. Since I already had a swimsuit on, I just jumped right in to the water. Immediately I started body surfing, catching massive waves and riding them up, all the way up the sand, so I got tons of it shoved up my shirt. More than once I rode a wave, turned around and got knocked over by a second wave. From that experience my eyes were totally red and bloodshot. If I couldn’t catch a wave because it broke too early, I’d simply body slam it, usually leaving me flipped over and battered up. The only downside was the shallow water. It was only a few feet deep. Once there was a crab under the sand and it pinched me. It didn’t hurt, but it was really surprising.
After lunch (Pad Thai), I started building sand castles. My dad made one with perfectly smooth walls and towers that a dog eventually destroyed. I made a much rougher castle with a deep moat and big walls that the same stupid dog peed on! The other thing I did was dig deep holes close to the water so they created under sand lakes and eventually sinkholes, one of which I stepped on. Yep, yesterday was pretty fun.
Our schedule here has been: schoolwork in the morning until lunch, movie (we’ve been buying more 'throwaway' DVDs), pool/beach in the late afternoon until dinner, then D&D or mahjong in the evening before bedtime. We’ve been reading more, Paul’s been working on his photo book of our trip, and we’ve just been relaxing. We’re resting up before we head to India next week.
Buying the DVDs here has been fun. Their quality is questionable but the fun part is: you never know what language the movie will be in. Now they all come with Thai subtitles. The kids pick things like: Alvin and the Chipmunks, Open Season 2, Ice Age 3, Mall Cop, Tom and Jerry. We’ve gotten movies that have things we’ve seen or will see: Angkor temples (Tomb Raider), terracotta soldiers (The Mummy 3), and Raiders of the Lost Ark 1,2,3 (Middle East, India, and Petra in Jordan, respectively). And, we’ve also been watching older movies like: Ghostbusters, Zorro 1, 2 (the Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones ones), Cheaper by the Dozen, with them. I guess we should have joined NetFlix a long time ago. We never had cable back home, so watching all these movies is a treat for us!

Enjoying the warm surf at Surin Beach
. We went there in a tuk tuk and when we got there, Jacob and I immediately ran to the waves and went body surfing. After awhile, I got bored, so I went to build an underground castle (as I call them). It was fun going snorkelling and I made a sand mine and Dad made the best sand castle I ever saw. It had perfect walls and perfect castles, but it was not even strong enough to stand a touch. Jacob's journal:
