After breakfast we jumped in a taxi to the airport for our flight to Kathmandu. Our flight was delayed only 15 minutes, which is very good as we had heard stories that Nepal Airlines (no longer Royal) are notorious for delays. We landed in Kathmandu late afternoon and a driver from our hotel was there to pick us. We noticed the difference in climate straight away, it is so nice to be a bit cooler and with no humidity!
We drove through the busy, narrow and polluted streets to our budget hotel, but our room was horrible and filthy. We decided to stay one night as they'd picked us up and we couldn't be bothered to look for somewhere else. That night we walked around the Thamel area which is full of restaurants and shops and really busy with loads of cars and motorbikes all pomping their horns.
Next day we moved hotel rooms early doors as we couldn't really sleep, then after a little shopping we headed for Durbar Square in the old part of the city, where the city's Kings were once crowned. The square is made up of three smaller squares all full of Hindu and Buddhist temples from various eras. It was busy and hot so we didn't stay as long as planned, we'll probably go back when we're in Kathmandu again . At night we went to a Newari restaurant to see a cultural show of live Nepali music and dancing, which was entertaining and the food was lovely.
