After 6 hours on the bus we were back in Phnom Penh, the capital, fighting our way off the bus past all the tuk-tuk drivers. Later we went to the Killing Fields, which is where the Khmer Rouge carried out the mass executions of the Cambodian people in the 70's. Obviously it is an extremely traumatic place to visit, with a large monument near the entrance housing all the skulls found from the mass graves excavated so far - over 9,000.
We walked around the mass graves themselves which was really upsetting and so shocking to be where such dreadful things have happened to people. The graves are just big holes in the ground and you can see peoples' clothing just under the surface. There are still areas to be excavated so the numbers of remains will undoubtedly increase; so far they have found the remains of around 17,000 people.
That night we went out on the razzle for the first time in months and hit the happy hours for cheap cocktails!
