We arrived in Santiago at 3am. Flying over the Andes seeing the snow capped mountains through the clouds in moonlight was really beautiful. One of them was Cerro Aconcagua and at 6962m it is the highest peak in the southern and western hemispheres. Paul soon brought me back down to earth, even before we landed, with ´we´re just flying over the Andes, get it in perspective!´

We spent the first day sightseeing around the city, taking in a a few plazas, churches and visiting the viewing point of the city, Cerro Santa Theresa. This was set in a little park with walkways and steps winding up the hill to the top with a great view across the city. That night we visited a Peruvian restaurant (as we`re not going there!) and had a lovely meal followed by going to a little gig to watch a Chilean folk band.

Then on the second day to get away from celebrating Australia Independence Day crazy backpacker style in the hostel we visted the visual arts museum to see some contemporary sculpture, some of it a little weird, and an archeological exhibition about Easter Island. We also went to Cerro San Cristobal a mountain over 800m. We took a funicular to the top of the mountain where the views were amazing. Also overlooking the city, is a statue of Virgin Mary that can be seen from many parts of the city. We spent the day walking around the park getting lost!
