A journey of 25 hours by bus, another bus, another bus and boat led us to the Ilha Grande, an island three hours south of Rio. We planned three days of relaxing beach time as it was supposed to be paradise with isolated gorgeous beaches and very few people around.....how different could it be!!
The island does have some beautiful beaches but they are dotted all around the island and are only accessible by taxi boats which are expensive. We did manage to find one beach called Lopes Mendes (which was in our price bracket) which after getting away from the crowds was really nice with crashing waves to mess about in and lovely soft white sand.
But due to torrential rain storms, polluted sea and littered beaches and the sheer number of people there, Ilha Grande was a bit of a let down. Fortunatley we found an apartment with kitchen etc rather than just a room so we could just veg indoors until it stopped raining!!
We did still manage to get sun burned again though despite loads of cream and even in the rain so the Brits abroad theme continues!!
