Our bus to San Martin de Los Andes took a route called the road of the seven lakes, because it passes, yep seven different lakes. We were enjoying this very much until the bus ground to a halt with the contents of its radiator emptying onto the road! (On a very dusty stretch of road with no lake in sight.) After many attempts to radio the bus depot on the CB and a two hour wait, we were on our way again in a nice new bus!
San Martin de Los Andes is quite small and is next to Lake Lacar. We struggled a bit to find a hostel with it being Christmas and also the school summer holidays, but we found somewhere and they cooked everyone at the hostel a lovely meal on Christmas Eve - they celebrate then more than the 25th. We had a really good night, but missed everyone in Th´orse!
On Christmas Day after phoning home and talking to our folks we went on a walk along the side of the lake and had an amazing view of it and the mountains, then a picnic on the beach of the lake, it was strange to be so hot! On Boxing Day we went on another boat trip further up the lake to Quila Quina and walked further around. We then decided to take a short cut on the way back a cross the river which looked so inviting from the bank. The reality was very cold and very painful and we were unfortunate enough to have our indignity caught on camera by Erna and Kornel a couple we were staying at the hostel with (see photo). That night we had a power cut so it was cooking and cards by candle light.
