We arrived in Montpellier with high expectations. Every French person we talked to, from the L'Occitane saleslady we met in Avignon to the naval officer we met on the train, literally gave two thumbs up to Montpellier. It was brilliant.
Montpellier has wide, tree-lined pedestrian boulevards, lively squares, a vibrant atmosphere and a young university-aged population. It also has great public spaces which are well-shaded by giant leafy trees--perfect oases from the hot summer sun. We spent a lot of time picnicking and sitting on Montpellier's numerous park benches.
We saw our first Roman aqueduct in Montpellier. It's amazing to see how the Romans were able to build such monstrous water works that have stood for a couple millennia. It makes you wonder what the ruins of our empires will look like in a few thousand years. Will the hulks of our empty mega malls remind our distant descendants of our ability to build monstrous temples to consumerism and our need to have mexi fries with our cinnabons?
