Tizi'n'Tichka is the itchy name for the main pass that leads out of the High Atlas Mountains towards the coast and the crown jewel of Morocco-Marrakech. We settled into our van for the scenic trip. At the foot of the High Atlas Mountains is the tiny town of Telouet-famous for being the location of the Kasbah of the Glaouis. The Glaouis were two brothers who gained the favour of the Sultan Moulay Hassan in the late 1800's by sheltering and feeding the Sultan's stranded army. The Glaouis were basically bandits and they used the canon the Sultan left as payment to cement their terrible reign over the High Atlas Mountains. We visited the Glaouis' crumbling kasbah. The opulence and extravagance of the place is still very evident and even now is truly unexpected given the impoverished and desolate surroundings. However, the truly luxurious attraction for us at the kasbah was the small café at the entrance to the fortress. The café had an expansive balcony that overlooked the nearby fields of the town. We were tired of the mint tea and café au lait so we ordered the almond juice. Our daring choice was rewarded as we enjoyed our delicious creamy creation of avocado, almond, date, fig, banana and milk with our feet up enjoying our view of the Moroccan countryside. Next stop-beach town.
