We arrive into Arequipa afer a massive slog. 12hrs on a train back up to La Paz, straight onto a bus for another 3hrs into Copacabana, a few hrs kip then 14hrs on the bus back across the border into Peru and down to Arequipa. We bought sleeping tablets in Bolivia, and they certainly helped with that journey.
We were only going here to view the Condors from Colca Canyon, but when we saw Arequipa town we were stunned. The Plaza de Armas is beautiful, the square has a fountain surrounded by big green trees and the Cathedral, and the massive snow covered El Misti and Chachani mountains in the background.
The Cruz del Condor tour was priced at 25dollars, so we did it ourselves for a fraction of that. Stayed in Chivay overnight and got the local bus up early the next morning. For a while we thought we would see nothing but as the sun rose and the day heated up the birds came out to play. They put on some show and i dont think anyone was disapointed. They are so graceful for their size and when they glide only a few feet away from your face you can really appreciate how big they actually are. Might seem like a bit of a trek just to look at birds, but its definitely worth it.
