Our bus to Siem Reap was in bits!! Couldn't get reverse and after that was fixed with a screwdriver and wrench it couldn't get 3rd gear! All the same it got us where we wanted to go and was in better nick than some of the buses on the road which were held together with brown tape.
When we arrived we were met by Richard - who had been contacted by his brother in the Lazy Fish guesthouse in Phnom Penh. Richard doubled as our guide for the next 2 days. We bought a 3 day pass ($40 each) which turned out to be a bad idea. Don't get us wrong the Temples were amazing but 1 day would have been enough for us anyway. We got some great snaps of Angkor Wat at sunrise which was spectacular and well worth dragging ourselves out of bed at 5am for. Walking around all the temples and looking at the amazing carvings and the sight of huge overgrown tree roots gave you some sort of insight into the age of the ruins. We got to Preah Thom on the 2nd day which is where Tomb Raider was flimed - Paul recognised some of it and could picture Angelina running around even though all you could see was hoards of Chinese tourists!!
After the 2nd day we gave up on the temples and brought Richard out for a few Angkor beers. He spent the night telling us how much he loves Western women and got very excited when two blonde English girls joined us for a drink (Paul says they were certainly not model material). The girls didn't stay long when they realised what he was after - he had to go home shortly afterwards too because he couldn't stand, but nonetheless he hopped on his motorbike. Next morning he arrived with our bus tickets to Bangkok, covered in circular burns which turned out to be some sort of mental Chinese hangover cure!!! The burns last around 4 weeks - seems a bit excessive whats wrong with two solpadeine.
