So last stop....NYC! We'd had a bit of a result with accommodation here, as our friend from Tiger Leaping Gorge in China had kept in touch and put us up for 4 days for a very reasonable price! He lived in Queens, just across the water from Manhattan, and a 5 minute walk from his flat revealed a cracker of a view of the New York skyline!
The following day saw us get our (imaginary) 'I heart NYC' T-Shirts on and do the touristy stuff there! We started by seeing Times Square....MENTAL!! All sorts going on there...what a place! We then made our way down Broadway and saw the first ever skyscraper in New York, Maddison Square Garden, the Empire State Building, Wall Street and the new World Trade Centre (which is the tallest building in North America now). We also had a look at the newly-built 9/11 memorial site. A design competition was announced as to what the memorial should look like. Thousands of applications from quite a few countries had entered with various designs, but the one that was chosen was a site with two very simple water features that were positioned where the two original twin towers were, engraved with the names of all the people who lost their lives as a result of the tragedy. It was quite a simple design but one which we thought was very effective and fitting as a memorial. A line of trees was also planted that included one that was re-planted that had actually survived that fateful day.
From there we took a trip on the Statten Island ferry, got our pic of the Statue of Liberty, and then went straight back!
The next day saw us do Grand Central Station, Central Park.....RAIN!! Ot ooohhhhhhhh!! Luckily, we didn't need the weather that afternoon because we were watching a show on Broadway! "New Yorrrkk Neeewww YOOOOORRRKKKK,,". That's enough of me singing...!! We actually saw the Lion King. What a top show that was! You all know what happens, but those guys are top notch!! Very enjoyable! In the evening we went along to Jimmy's 'storytelling' event that he hosts, which had a 'travelling' theme to it. He had 4 guest speakers who all told funny and interesting and also very weird stories which we both enjoyed! A top view of Brooklyn Bridge and the city was our last hurrah in New York, and the trip as a whole.
And thats that! Its been an amazing journey and one that neither of us will ever forget! Seeing and experiencing so many different cultures has been both interesting and a real eye-opener at times! We've seen some superb expected highs from Macchu Picchu, safari in South Africa, China's Great Wall and more recently, the Grand Canyon. But it was arguably the things we knew nothing about before we went away that were the REAL highlights of this trip. I'm talking the gorgeous Jiuzhaighu National Park, Tongariro National Park in New Zealand, the climbing of mountains Pico Austria and Kinabalu and arguably the best of the lot, Chile's 'Volcan Villarica'. Thanks to everyone who we've met along the way who has shared part of our journey, in particular Dave and Mel, Michael and Laura and Jimmy! And also thanks to those of you who have read and/or commented on this blog. We've had a few lows aswell along the way, but all in all, it's safe to say its been the best thing we've both ever experienced!! But it's time to come home to see friends and family, which we've both been ready for and excited about for a while now.......and the first thing I've gotta do is sort my lawn out that my dad has knackered whilst we've been away....!!!!
