'Family Guy Series 10' - (THE FULL SERIES!!) cemented the fact that I wasn't getting ANY sleep on the 13 hour flight to Hong Kong! Meanwhile, 'zzzdy' over 'ere was fast asleep straight away! She CAN kip on transport!! Touched down, couldn't escape from the airport for what seemed like ages and eventually made it to the hostel. Strange set up - we were on the 10th floor of a building that was PACKED full of mini hostels, but on the ground and first floor was a very multi-cultural market. "Watch, sir....copy watch? Rolex sir....tailored suit sir??" Handbag madam, massage madam..??!! "No thank you, no thank you, no thank you, no thank you, no thank you..." and we were finally out of the complex to roam a bit! Those guys are relentless!! Got to the waterfront and watched a pretty impressive light show, starring all the skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island, which form an impressive view!! Nice! Back to our room, über-efficiently small but had all the essentials. Likewise the loos....you can't be fat in Hong Kong or else you'd be f@&ked!!! To get slightly crude for one second, I went for a jobbie on the first night and both my knees and head were touching to wall infront of me!!
Thursday saw us head over to Hong Kong Island via the 'Star Ferry' which has been in service since the 19th century, and at roughly 18p, its still priced in the 19th century!! Result! Had a mooch around the BUSY posh shopping part before making our eagerly-awaited chopstick debut! We both did ok, but learnt that if you eat food with chopsticks, so does your clothes!! Everything I've worn has got food on it!! GET ME A FORK!! On to the 'Sky Viewing Platform' to get a PROPER look at this place. The tram to the top was not funny! We were one of the last on, everyone sat down bar me, then this tram didn't go up a hill, it went up a feckin CLIFF!! I was hangin onto the seats tryin not to fall out the back, bein laughed at by a few!! My achilles are in bits!! Cracking view, marred only by the heavy smog over the city. "Come on we'll walk down - it'll only take us half an hour..."....over an hour later with burning shins because of the sheer decent (yeah another tickin off for me!!) we got to the bottom, had another stroll around then back home!
Friday was VERY similar in all fairness, but with the added treat that we were to buy a laptop as there are LOADS of small electrical shops all (you guessed it) PACKED into the same building. Once you're in, it's hard to find your way out!! I felt like I was in Crystal Maze (I should know, I once presented it...!!!). After a spot of noodle soup for lunch ("mmm soup....i mean noodle soup....I mean soup....DAMN IT!!) i used my 'internationally recognised sign for a laptop (close palms, open palms from one end, then 'air type'!) to buy a laptop. Then bought laptop cover, walked to ferry, crossed river on ferry, walked under subway, walked home up 10 flights of stairs, got home, laptop case too small for laptop, walked down 10 flights of stairs, walked under subway, got ferry, walked to shop...and did he change it for us...?? (Yeah he did actually, I was quite proud of myself!!). Then home.
After Kala was ravaged by a hungry mozzy in the night, we had a walk to Mong Kok in the morning (most densely populated area on earth apparently). And er.....yeah...it was pretty busy. Got my 'lots of Chinese signs on a street' photo and that pretty much wrapped up Hong Kong! Come here if a) you have loads of money to spend on EXPENSIVE gear, b) you like tall buildings and c) you need a fake Rolex, tailored suit, fake handbag or body massage!!! Don't come here if you wanna get pissed up! Think we've only seen one bar and there was a 'Hong Kong pub crawl' advertised in our building in which they went to just 4 bars! Beijing next, see you there!
