We left Hermanus early and again, the Baz Bus did the first leg of the journey. We were picked up from George by our shuttle bus driver - 'mental Gavin!!' He looked like Dhalsim from 'Streetfighter 2' and was a top bloke!! Into bed early doors and up again early doors. We had our 4th type of Wheetabix for breakfast....after 'Wheetabix' and Aldi's 'Wheat Bisks' and Wheat bix,' today was the turn of South Africa's very own 'Weet-Bix!' Not bad!! First stop this morning was at the Cango Caves. Gavin and his shuttle bus got us there at 'race pace!' The caves are one of Southern Africa's 7 wonders and the spectacular stalagmites and tites have been growing for over 3 million years. South Africa's earliest people found shelter here over 80,000 years before the caves were officially discovered in 1780 by Dutch colonists. They made for some superb viewing!
What happened during the 45 minutes after the caves wouldn't have looked out of place in 'An Idiot Abroad!!' We went to an ostrich farm. First a few ostrich facts for you... males are black and white, females grey and white. The meat comes from what we would call their thigh but they call it their knee and it has 70% less fat than beef. An egg is equivalent to 24 chicken eggs!! And the female ostrich lays an egg every other day until she has between 10 and 15 eggs. She then sits on them for 42 days and then they all hatch on the same day!!
"What is your name, sir?"..."Paul"...."Well lucky for you Paul, today you will be kissing our beautiful ostrich, Betsy!!" GREAT!!!! First up we went to see them and Kala was first into the spotlight, as she stood right next to the ostrich while it ate food from the guide, who was stood behind Kala, basically wrapping its neck around her like a cuddle!! Funny funny!! Then my turn....I had to hold a bit of ostrich food in my mouth while it pecked it out (simulating a kiss!)! The little fecker pecked me right in the face!!! Anyway, soon after that the fun really started! I was gonna ride on the back of one. I thought she was joking at first but apparently not. I got changed into my 'ostrich-riding' suit which was EMBARRASSINGLY SMALL (check out the half-masts)!!! 2 guys got an ostrich in a pen of about 15-20 of them, blindfolded it and guided it over to where I was. They put it in a little then put me on the back of it. "Hold it's wings tight!"...."Don't you worry about that..." ...but before I could finish my sentence the blindfold was off and the ostrich BOLTED!! I kieked myself!!!! SH@@@@@@T!! I'm grippin this thing like you wouldn't believe!!! It charged away from the pen and turned left, then did a loop and threw me off!! Cheers! Revenge for me eatin one the other night!!
In the afternoon we went to the Cango Wildlife Ranch, home of the famous (ok maybe not 'famous') purring cheetah!! Had a top afternoon and was guided round the park by Garth, who showed us his collection of wildlife, ranging from big crocs and hippos to a massive selection of big cats and, sure enough, one of the cheetahs was purring away (according to Kala anyway...I couldn't hear it!!)! What really stood out here was their real passion and enthusiasm to increase the numbers of these endangered species. One example of this is that they have a separate breeding ground and work with partners worldwide to strengthen the gene pool and stop inbreeding. Impressive stuff!!
That night we ate ostrich steak and ostrich sausage......HA!!
