We arrive at the bus stop, amongst kaos and a pile of drivers (scooters tuk tuk's) trying to get us to come with them. We decided not to take them on this time and left the bus stop... BAD MISTAKE! Found out they only charge $1, we should have taken the tuk tuk this time! You never know with these guys here.
Finally we decide to get a tuk tuk after walking and not being able to find the area we wanted to stay in, apparently is doesn't exist anymore and they have all moved. The driver says I have place for you! We head to Okay guest house. Okay (AWESOME) Guesthouse, this place was a great stopover. They have rooms from around $6 up to $12 then add a few bucks for A/C, great rooms we opted for the $12 room with heaps of room to move and a super hot shower which is sometimes hard to find in these parts. You are handed a book when you check in and this book is like an honesty system, you go to the fridge grab some beers or whatever you like put it in the book and pay when you leave. Great system and worked a treat. They also have all your travel needs sorted out with a pile of different options available for pretty much anywhere yo can get to from Phnom Penh.
Later that night we head out to the local park and a massive one it is, just a short stroll form the guesthouse. We stumble across some local mayhem and laughter. A large group watching what looked like some kind of comedy theatre, it was quite dark and we don't speak the language so it pretty much could have been anything. Further down we enter the sound of a thousand dance parties and guess what? Pretty much was. All over the park are small to medium gatherings of people doing a line dance cross exercise wok out similar to the ones in Kampong Cham but more up beat almost looking like a training camp for a rave party, some groups almost pushing the high standards of the Backstreet Boys.... yes it was a funny sight to see one well worth a look in.
The next morning we decide on a walking tour of Phnom Penh. As soon as we leave Okay the tuk tuk drivers pounce! Tuk TOOOK sir tooook TOOOK! This became the sound of the morning 47 times we were asked for a Tuk Tuk from 11.30am and around 1.30ish and 45 minutes of this time we were at a shop. They really turn it on in Phnom Penh so much that you cannot concentrate on whats in front of you of whats going on around you. We get back with a grand total of 63 Tuk Tuk sir. and this was trying to dodge the groups of Tuk Tukers.
Our walking tour showed up some great little local sites, back streets, markets, crazy food, chopped fish, bowls of prawns, amazing smells and some pretty nasty ones too, scooter drivers pissing on main street walls, elephants advertising the new local beer, temples, monkeys, pajama ladies..... and then, a bottle shop 1 litre of Jim Beam O/S version which has a higher Alc volume for $8.50, BARGAIN. Also my hair has now reached the stage of a must get one now situation so we see a sign "Man Women Haircut" super! In we go $1.50 they say, I say lets go! Straight away we are served a cup of tea each even though I am the only one getting a cut. Probably one of the most accurate haircuts I have had and they even throw in a shoulder and back massage.
On the way back we spot a few boats coming in an they looked loaded to the point of sinking, typical Cambodia, if it aint full... wait... until you cannot possibly fit another thing in and THEN it is time to go.
We head back to Okay (AWESOME) Guesthouse as we had most of our meals there, the food was GREAT along with the service and the wide screen TV playing movies.
Tomorrow we head to Sihanoukville, all organised by Okay. $6 VIP A/C bigger seats and a dunny (toilet) bus was Paramount which seem to be a good option.
