Where I stayed
First adventure was haggling with a local boat owner to take us up river to Pak Ou Caves. Haggling the price down we discovered was a way to make the trip just that little bit on the dodgy side, you get what you pay for! Leaking slow boat and I mean slow boat, trying to save fuel by going super slow boat filling up with water and young Nam on the back bailing out buckets of water every ten minutes, very funny!
The night markets run here every night from just before sunset to late. Lots of bargains to be had.
Local food and markets a plenty in Luang Prabang. Every night 7 days a week here. Plate of food, $1.20AU buffet on the street corner with at least 10 choices of some beautiful vegitarian food and food grilled on sticks between $0.50 - $2.00, $2.00 being half a pig!!! The chicken BBQ on sticks was one of our favourites. So many little local treats to eat like the coconut cream puffs, 5,000Kip ($0.60) for a bag of 5... taste sensation and the Lao sandwhich ladies make you a massive snack anytime of day with huge rolls stuffed with whatever you want. One other thing not to be missed is the Lao iced coffee.... WOW a bucket of iced coffee 5,000Kip medium which is PLENTY.
Lao Lao garden BBQ is a place not to be missed, $20 got Emz and I 3 glasses of wine a glass of vodka, yes straight vodka around 3 or 4 shots worth, a plate of chicken, pork and buffalo, noodles and veggies, your own personal BBQ (coals) on your table to pour into a huge dish where you make a soup broth while roasting your meat on top where the juices dribble into the soup, super fun eating for over an hour! You also get a dish full of garlic and chillies to add to the broth in the soup. This meal we could have gone back time after time.
Our last day in Luang Prabang... well our last day with the crew, Damien and Chanel had their own mission this day the rest of the crew decided to head down to a beach... well sort of beach down by the river, it had sand and water. We crossed the bamboo bridge and relaxed in the sand drinking Beerlao and playing our favourite card game, Solo. Great afternoon Will and Cindy joined in as their wobbly tuk tuk driver took them to the wrong bus station and they missed the bus so they were hanging out with us until they could get another bus to their new destination.
Great times in Luang Prabang with our little crew.... guys... we will miss you dearly. Happy travels until we meet again. We are so sure we WILL meet again.
