We caught an 18 hour bus from BA, south to Puerto Madryn. The journey was comfortable though I hardy slept, Eleanor morphed into the cushions as usual. Puerto Madryn is on the south eastern side of Argentina, in Patagonia and famous world-wide for its nature. We hired a taxi to view some sea lions. The taxi driver stormed along miles of gravel road like something from Sega Rally! The hostel was great, mainly due to serving homemade flan and tarts for breakfast!

When we were walking along the beach front, we could see many whales swimming in the sea. We then went on a tour of Peninsula Valdes, we saw wild animals including the Patagonian fox, Patagonian hare, a smaller variety of ostrich, ginger llamas and sea lions. These were pretty exciting to see but nothing compared to the boat trip where we saw whales breaching in the waters, close to our boat. The whales (southern right whales) came feet away from the boat, in fact 2 swam right under us which was just amazing. 50 tonnes, 15 metres in length and we were sprayed by one of their blow holes! After the boat trip, we visited another part of the peninsula which had amazing views and some elephant seals. There were many female cows on the shore and a couple of bulls in separate areas. The Bull elephant seal was huge, weighing 4-5 tonnes and the largest of its kind in the world. It's an ugly thing, making farting, rippling and belching noises all the time. The ladies must find this attractive as one male often has 40 females in wait! Other highlights were seeing a skeleton of a 2 year old whale. They have human-like hand bone structures inside their fins which was strange to see.
