After a beautiful and relaxing drive from Milford Sound we arrived in Queenstown early evening and set up camp in 12 Mile Delta just 12km out of town, (anyone traveling to New Zealand DOC sites are a must for free and very cheap campsites). It was a beautiful setting once again on the shore of a lake; we have never seen so many lakes as we have in New Zealand, every one surrounded by mountains, sometimes deer, but nearly always sheep! I always thought we had a lot of sheep in Ireland, but once again New Zealand has to go bigger and better.
The next morning we took Oscar to the doctors (to the rental company) as his fridge wasn't working, and although cold enough to keep milk cold we wanted to make sure that meat etc would be ok, as one can only have so many Weet-bix. Although Paul has perfected the perfect omelettes, we thought a few sausages wouldn't go a miss! We were told an electrician would have to come out in the afternoon, so we were given a wee car for the day. We had already decided that although we were in the adventure capital we weren't really interested in anything and would invest our money in something else along the way so we headed into the town centre and had a leisurely day walking around and went for lunch in Pog Mahones. Queenstown is a beautiful city, with beautiful autumn leaves on the trees in the hills all around the city. It reminds me of what I have seen of Aspen in the movies.
We went to pick up Oscar and were told that we would be getting another van as they wouldn't be able to fix the problem. So we transferred all our belongings (including Oscar's heart and soul - so we still have Oscar, just in a different shell). After leaving Queenstown, we stopped briefly at a small town called Arrowtown, which looked like something out of the 40's. It was a quaint, cute wee village with lovely colours coming from the Autumn leaves. A few Horses and carts would have made the town complete. The town was originally a town made from the Gold rush and had kept very close to its original style of buildings. A must see for anyone who happens to be near by.
