Showered and ready for the day we took off on the road to Oswiecim otherwise known as Auschwitz, the grounds for the old German Concentration camp.... Not a very nice sight but something that had to be done. We took a tour around and were amazed by the stories told and the things we saw... 70,000 shoes were collected from outside the gas chambers that they led the Jews in to, to be murdered! The cell blocks, like prison within prison were tiny, we heard stories of people being forced into them in 4's, by which they had to crawl and then there was only enough room for them to stand... no one could sit down, sleep deprived they were let out in the morning only to be led to work where they worked 12 hours without food or water, needless to say they didn't last too long before starvation and exhaustion took them away! Others were only allowed 10 seconds in the 'bathrooms' which consisted of holes cut out of concrete twice daily and were shot if caught going to the toilet at any other time. The things these people went through are hideous... how humans could do these things to each other is just horrible! Over 2 million people were killed here, not mentioning the people who were killed else where or who never made it to the registration stage, like many of the Jews who were led straight to the gas chambers, tricked into thinking they were mass showers. A group hug was needed by the end of the tour... a place I would never like to go to again, but an eye opener and something I don't regret.
On a lighter note, our next day was spent in Krakow. Where we just walked round, taking in the sights. Krakow is the home of the largest town square in Europe, it branches off in to many cute little streets with pretty coloured buildings and cool castles and churches. A much nicer side of Poland to see... and from here it was south in to Slovakia.....
