Next stop was Nordlingen, where we spent the night. A 14th century town built inside a huge crater measuring 25km in diameter! Rothenburg ob der Tauber was next and it had to be my favourite! Not a modern building in sight, old cobble streets and old fashioned shops and bakeries. A beautiful medieval town! Complete with an old fashioned torture museum that we checked out... quite interesting actually, the things they use to do to people and believe. I still can't believe they use to make the bride and groom walk under a veil, if it stayed floating they were able to marry, but if it dropped, it proved they were impure and they were not allowed to marry! They made drunken men wear huge beer barrels (which we thought we could use now and again!!) and they use to tie quarrelling women together until they were silent! It's unimaginable today! We found a nice little pull over surrounded with trees and called it a day. Watched a DVD on the lap tops and relaxed.
Next on the list was Eisenach where we visited Wartburg Castle then Leipzig and what a change driving into what was 'eastern Germany'. The roads were bumpy and the buildings old and in bad shape! We learnt a lot at the Stasi (secret police) museum and the East German museum, with lots of info on the Berlin wall which was great as Berlin was the next stop!
Berlin!! The next two days were full of history, apart from the pub crawl we did right in the middle! We found a camping ground, its often easiest in a big city! Caught up on washing, showered and took off to town. We were quite lucky and managed to tack on to a free walking tour, amazingly enough it was led by a kiwi girl! She was excellent... full of stories and historical info! We managed to get most of the big sites in, including the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Holocaust memorial, the Parliament buildings, Hitler's old bunker and much more. It was great because the next day we knew our way round and did all the bits there wasn't time for on the tour. We checked out a few museums and had a great dinner in town before heading back to the camping ground for a good nights sleep. Today the group split, Us and Astro and Sus headed for Czech, everyone else had been there so they headed in there own direction....
