1 Feb - 3 Feb

We now have 3 days of Spanish lessons, one on one, with a Chilean teacher who speaks very good English, we are also staying in his house (which is a hostel). People understand us when we ask them questions in Spanish (most of the time) but we cannot understand their replies as they speak so fast and use slang. We cannot distinguish when one word starts and finishes, let alone a new sentence! Our written Spanish is far superior than oral so our lessons are revision and to understand some of the common phrases we will need in the next 3 months.

Puerto Montt is basically a transport hub so not many people stay here for very long (its where the Navimag ferry leaves from which goes down south to Puerto Natales). They do have a very good fish market where we bought a huge salmon fillet for one pound fifty, which we cooked back at the hostel.

Our Spanish teacherīs next door neighbour, Petito, is a cook and sells his food to his neighbours. We bought corn pie, raspberry cake and had a lovely Curanto (local dish which is a seafood stew - mussels, clams, sausage, pork, potato and tortillas). Far easier than cooking ourselves...and cheaper :)
