Hello people!

Here is our latest blog from Sydney.

Now I was looking forward to Sydney. It's a city that always looks good for New Year and has a great reputation but the main reason why I was looking forward to it was because Sydney was where I was going to ask Miss Sargent to marry me!

I have had it planned in my mind for a while and I thought the Sydney Harbor Bridge would be the perfect spot to propose. To keep it a secret took some effort! First of all my Mom (bless her) wanted Karen to have her old engagement ring so I have been carrying that around for the past 6 months. Every time Karen went into that particular bag I would scream "get out, I will get whatever you need"! Also carrying around an engagement ring whilst backpacking is not good for the heart. Anyhow, thankfully I managed to keep hold of the precious stone. So now all I had to do is ask for the blessing off Karen's folks ( I am a traditionalist like that), ask her the big question and hopefully she would have said yes!

SHE DID! It went perfectly. We were walking over the bridge with The Opera House right in front of us when I got down on one knee to pretend to be doing something. I then asked her and for the first minute all she did was laugh and kind of dance!!! I had to remind her in fact that she had not actually said yes yet! Very funny. We have photos of the moment but only just as when we asked a passer by to take a shot she dropped my camera and killed it! Luckily it had just enough life in it to take some shots before dying on me completely. So I had to buy a new one. Karen is already costing me money and we have not even set a date yet! lol. After walking across the bridge we had a lovely celebratory lunch overlooking the harbor. It was a perfect day which ended in typical Karen & I style by sleeping on some mattresses in a student house!

I loved Sydney. THAT harbor is as good as people say it is. What a way to enter a city, as many huge cruise liners were while we were there. We went to quite a few areas too and I liked them all so it would be a hard toss up to choose between Melbourne & Sydney. Both have their unique points. What we were not too impressed with were Sydney's fabled beaches. They were way too busy for our liking. Maybe we have been spoiled in Asia but we like our beaches calm, quiet and empty! I did like the actual area of Bondi though. New Year's eve was a spectacular as it looks on t.v. but I will let my fiancee (lol) talk more in depth about our exploits in the various parts of the city.

Oh by the way we were also in Sydney for New Year and had the best spot in the house. Right in front of the bridge and next to the opera house. We had to get there by 13:00 to secure the spot but it was well worth it. It was a fun day ending with a spectacular firework display that Sydney is renowned for. A dream come true for me to witness it and what a way to start 2012!

I've always wanted to visit Sydney. I couldn’t wait to see its famous harbour and the iconic Sydney Opera house. As we caught the first glimpse of the famous building from our train, shivers ran down my spine. As we walked out, the first thing we heard was an aboriginal guy in traditional costume playing the didgeridoo to house music. It was amazing and just added to the awesome surroundings. Our first port of call was the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where I had no idea what lovely surprise was awaiting me. The view from the bridge is incredible, and as I was looking out admiring the Opera House from afar I heard Paul exclaim 'Look here!’ I turned round and found him on one knee with a box in his hand. He opened the box saying ‘Karen Sargent will you marry me?’ Ahhhhhhhhhh. I’m welling up now as I write it. Funnily enough I didn’t actually cry on the day, instead I laughed and laughed and laughed! Very bizarre reaction! I managed a ‘yes’ in between laughs. Nothing could have made me happier.

We walked across the bridge with big Cheshire cat grins on our faces and headed to an amazing restaurant to celebrate. The views were spectacular and the food divine. Paul and I spent a glorious afternoon eating, staring into each others’ eyes and smiling widely. What a day!

A real highlight of our stay in Sydney was a trip to Manly beach. We caught the ferry there, which is a must-do in itself. We had beautiful views of the harbour, the bridge and the opera house. The island itself is also great with interesting shops, good restaurants and a couple of beaches.

Like mad dogs and English men, we decided to hike across a part of the island on this bush walk. The walk itself was great, but doing it in 30 degree heat not so much. Our efforts were rewarded with great views of Sydney and a great sleep at night!

I’m really glad we got to see Sydney, and now after leaving it as a wife-to-be, it will always have a special place in my heart.

We left Sydney on a night train and shared our carriage with a drunk who got frisky with his neighbour, a hundred crying kids and a woman who would not stop complaining about the heat (to the extent that one of the crew told her ‘oh will you just shut up!’ tee hee)!

Next stop – Brisbane! See you when we get there

Lots of love

Karen and Paul
