It was a very easy journey from Kho Phangan to Samui. Just a quick trip on the boat and then a taxi waiting at the other end to take you to your chosen hostel / hotel.
We had one night in a cheap place about 20mins from Chawang beach before starting our 3 nights in a luxurious 5 star resort.
Our cheap place to lay our heads had a lot going for it. 2 welcome drinks when you arrived, a plate of tropical fruit in the afternoon, free lifts to the beach and a breakfast in the morning. All for about £14. Which for Samui is very cheap. Unfortunately, as the bugalows were quite old they were done in an old Thai style. Which is lots of wood on the interior walls. Now we know what that attracts don’t we children? Our old friends the cockroaches! Yep, we had one of those nights where we heard the familiar sound of scuttling above our heads
Chawang beach is really beautiful with lovely clear waters to swim in. We spent a lovely afternoon there before heading to a pub and then on to a place called Mama Crepe ( they did more than just crepes) for dinner. Luckily the place was open 24hrs so we headed there before hitting the beach for sunrise. They did do amazing crepes! Just what the doctor ordered at 04:30 in the morning. The sunrise was beautiful and we even got to spend it with some of the local beach dogs who decided that we needed some fuss.
You can imagine how tired we were when we checked in at our luxury retreat. Well all I can say is we were in the right place to recuperate. The place was beautiful. The reason why we decided to splash out was on the 08/08/11 was our 3rd year anniversary and on the 09/08/11 was the 1 year milestone of being on the road. So we had to celebrate in style. We did!
I will let my love talk about the hotel but before she does I would just like to say what an incredible year it has been. Words will never do it justice. The sense of freedom of being able to wake up, do what you like, when you like is amazing. The places we have seen have blown our minds away, especially when we have been surrounded by nature like in Siberia on Lake Baikal, or the sand dunes of the Gobi desert in Mongolia
When Paul says we managed to live on a total of £30 a day he is not including our three days of luxury at Silavadee Spa resort. Ah what bliss it was. When booking we’d cheekily requested an upgrade explaining that it was our anniversary and when we got there we found out that the lovely people at Silavadee thought we were deserving of it. Was asked and we got a beautiful room with gorgeous sea views and our own Jacuzzi on the balcony. My oh my! After roughing it for most of the year, everything about this room had us more excited than English football fans in 1966.
We spent most of our days either chilling out by the most beautiful infinity pool I’ve ever seen, staring out into the ocean and looking at the postcard perfect beach below us or drinking cocktails in our Jacuzzi. Nice.
Since our stay in this heavenly place was our joint gift for our anniversary I didn’t expect any surprises but Paul managed to pull a great one off by booking us a private table, overlooking the beach for our anniversary night
But, alas, all good things have to come to an end. Our three days of pampering were up before you could say ‘pass me the towel Jeeves’ and soon we found ourselves packing our backpacks once again, ready for the next adventure.
Our next stop will be at the opposite end of the spectrum as we’ll finally be doing that four-letter word activity starting with ‘W’. We’re on our way to an organic farm founded by the Humanistic foundation where we’ll be doing some manual labour as well as teach kids English.
See you when we get there!
Lots of loveKaren and Paulxxx
