After checking into the hotel, we went to the La Calera Hot Springs, geothermally heated. It was so nice to soak in the hot water. We even met David, who we first met in the Red Centre, Australia, such a small world!
We had dinner in another hotel, where they also had a local band and dancers. The food was not the best, but the entertainment was good, they got us all up to dance too.
After an early breakfast, we set off for the Colca Canyon. We settled at the viewpoint and at first only saw a couple of condors sat on the cliff
We hiked along the canyon, all the while being followed by the condors. The drive back to the hotel was amazing, the canyon was deep, with many pre-Inca crop terraces. Even got a great picture of the local police sightseeing!
We stopped of to have a look at the village church, which was lavishly decorated with gold. Then tried the local drink of cactus juice with Pisco.
It was then on to the home stay village where we were to spend the night with a family. We were split into twos and assigned a family. We had a lovely Mum and Dad, with an older son and daughter, and a lovely little girl. We got dressed in the local dress and had a walk through the village with Mum and little girl. Then picked potatoes from the garden. We had dinner with Mum and Dad, trying out our best Spanish. Then off to bed at 8.30pm. We needed a hot water bottle and lots of thick blankets, as well as all our clothes and a hat to keep warm - it was so cold!
After breakfast, we said goodbye and set off in the minibus to Puno. We stopped off on the way to see some cave drawings, it was a struggle up the hill for us all - damn altitude!
The scenery changed from hills and windy roads to wide flat valleys.
