Day 189
Entry 189 of 189 | show all | print this entry |
Part one:
I´m up early as i go watch Arsenal vs Milan finding Russ there and Danny joining us later. I rush back at half-time to check out and pick Nic up before returning for the 2nd half, with Arsenal winning 2-0 and playing amazing. We waste the rest of the morning away and go back to the hostel picking our bags up and finding that we´ve got 10 minutes to catch our airport shuttle bus so say quick goodbyes to Russ and Marc. Problems arise when we can´t get any money out from cash points meaning we won´t be going anywhere. Eventually after trying five cash points one will let us have enough and we´re taken to the airport albeit the wrong terminal. We check in and try to exchange a load of Asian notes we´ve accumulated but unfortunately only adds up to three pounds fifty so isn´t really worth our while. We board the plane and start our trip to the other side of the world doing the usual on flights of reading, sleeping, eating, watching movies, and playing games. We took off from Auckland at 17.30pm and land in Santiago at 12.30pm the same day.
Part two:
The flight went fairly quick for me and i don´t feel as fazed as expected. We´re met on arrival by a guy who sorts out our ride to the hostel. We´re a bit overawed by everything again after having the security of being in Westernised countries the last two months, it feels like we´re starting our traveling all over again. Especially being in a continent where the first language is Spanish. How we wished we´d consulted our phrasebook more over the past few weeks. The drive through Santiago before we reach the hostel it strikes me how everything is so hectic and squashed together with people every where, it´s almost reminiscent of Asia in a funny way. The hostel is nice crammed full of travelers, we spend the afternoon sleeping and walk later to the supermarket a bit dazed and come back and cook ourselves dinner before going back to bed to re-cover from our flight.

I can see the comparison (reply) Mar 26, 2008 11:32 EST by bamberd
I can see what he means to be honest, in the hectic sense of the word and in coming from New Zealand I can see how the comparison can be made when stepping off the plane into somewhere like Santiago. He´s not exactly saying Asia and South America are exactly the same now, is he?
