Day 5 - Datong
Entry 6 of 189 | show all | print this entry |
Breakfast is free but consists of soup, a massive dumpling and one egg, i lap it up, Nic stares at me like a weirdo as if i'm eating shit. We then get a bus to the Cloud Ridge Caves which are 16km outside Datong, why people go on organised tours to places like these i don't know why, i'm not exactly Marco Polo but i can at least get on the correct bus, it seems lazy people are the ones who go on these. I don't like Datong it's nondescript and is really ugly. This is offset by the caves which to use my favourite word of the trip so far are 'stunning'. There are around 50 caves although only 20 of them are worth seeing some of them dating back to 450AD. Some of them contain 13m high Buddhas and in all there are 50,000 Buddhas some only a couple of inches high. They were built into a mountain side and carved from the rock with such craftsmanship and detail it really is a spectacle. Up close they look impressive but it is when you take a few steps back that you have chance to see the enormity of the place and left to stratch your head and think 'how the hell did they do that?' While there we were approached by a Chinese teenage couple as the girl wanted her photo taken with Nic and I and remarked that i was a 'handsome boy' and Nic was a 'beautiful girl', well she's got eyes hasn't she?! At the caves i had concealed that i was flaking but this is no longer concealed on the bus home as keep nodding off for dog naps with my head bobbing up and down and mouth wide open, what the old Chines men think on the bus i wouldn't like to say but they seem content spitting phlegm out the window.
