Cohen was very excited the next morning as he and Aimee were going to Kennedy Space Center that day. We had asked both boys before we left to look through some books and online and find some places they would really like to see on our trip. Cohen immediately picked the Space Center. We decided early on that sometimes not the whole family would go if things were not age appropriate or if the cost would be too great as we were going to be traveling for such a long period of time. We also felt that this would give each child some special time alone with a parent that would provide for some wonderful memories. We did ask Caleb if he wanted to come this time as we thought he would really like it as well. He decided to stay with Bru and Clare and get groceries and swim or fish at the campground.
Cohen was smiling ear to ear when he returned announcing, "I definitely want to go to space someday"!
We started the day touring the rocket garden where you could see about 10 of NASA's historic rockets. You could also could climb inside a capsule to feel how cramped it was for the first astronauts.
We both really enjoyed the 3D IMAX movie about the International Space Station and couldn't stop talking about it. Since NASA is no longer sending shuttles into space we were able to take a bus tour through areas that until recently were closed to the public. The launch pad was amazing and we visited the Apollo building where you could see a real moon rock.
They had an Angry Birds Space exhibit where you could play "real life" angry birds which was a lot of fun.
Cohen also burned off some energy at a huge play structure outside.
He then spent quite a long time deciding how he would spend his hard earned money at the gift shop and finally left with a angry bird stuffy that makes the most irritating sounds ever. We've really been enjoying it in the truck!
The whole family visited the Merritt Island National Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore. The boys really enjoyed looking at a stuffed alligator's head at the visitor center.
After learning we may be able to see real alligators from the boardwalk hike everyone was eager to head out. We did see 3 little ones sunning themselves very close to the elevated boardwalk.
After a nice walk and chasing some geckos, we piled into the car to drive through the Black Point Wildlife Drive and saw some beautiful birds and spotted more alligators near the small river. It was recommended to us if we wanted to see some large alligators in the wild to drive down Bio Lab Dr. It was a narrow road with tons of pot holes and tons of large gators. We ended up having a "tour guide" in a vehicle in front of us that would periodically get out of his car to take pictures of these huge alligators. Caleb would lose his mind every time he got out worried he was going to get attacked.
The man must have got some great shots and it was nice for us because he pointed out all the alligators he saw.
Next we drove to the Manatee Observation deck an area where wild manatees like to hang out and eat. There was 5 manatees there and we spent quite a while watching these gentle giants. On the way home from the grocery store Bruce, Caleb, and Clare saw a car pulled over and something in the water that people were watching. It was some manatees mating and it was quite a sight! It also started our first little discussion about the birds and the bees with Caleb. Oh boy!
The rest of our time in Titusville we spent fishing or at the pool, mostly just recovering from Disney!
We had an exciting drive to Titusville in the rain! As we were driving along the highway, all of a sudden we heard a loud noise and it seemed like something hit the windshield. Bruce slowed down and we tried to figure out what was going on. It only took a moment to find out when the screeching of the wiper blade bar informed us that one of our windshield wipers blew off. We had of course just bought new blades before we left. After a moment of shock and once we realized no one was hurt we all burst into laughter. Miraculously, the rain just seemed to stop in that exact moment and we continued on our drive without any more problems. We found a replacement the next day!
