After my sojourn in Geneva, I spent the week inbetween back in Vienna doing homework, but more importantly, record shopping. I've been here a long time and somehow bought a mere one record when Meredith was here - that must be an all-time low for me. I made up for it this past Thursday. Months ago I'd looked up where all the record stores are, and with one exception they are all in the sixth and seventh districts, which I'd never really checked out before. I wish I had - it's a great part of town, and we found all six record stores I knew of, plus two more that we just stumbled upon. Some places were expensive, and many focused on vinyl (which is cool, but I somewhat prefer CDs), but with a bit of looking I found some great stuff. So that was cool.
Saturday morning me and my friend Niza left early for Munich. We stayed through Sunday evening and spent a lot of time just walking around town. We went through the Residenz (the imperial palace), the Olympic park, the English Gardens, the Neue Pinakothek (art museum), and Bavarian National Museum. We ended up really worn out, since we walked all over the place, only taking the U-Bahn to get back and forth from the Olympic Park. We found a great little place selling delicious falafel dürüms (which I think I've mentioned before...) and spent a bit of time at one of the many beer halls (not the big, famous one, the Hofbräuerei, as it was big, loud, and overcrowded). I was surprised, though, at how early things seemed to close. We got up pretty early and I was also surprised at the difficulty of finding a cafe that was both open on Sundays and open that early in the morning. We managed, though - and I did find an Indian restaurant that sold samosas on the side, so I had to get one, which was by no means a mistake. I should also mention that four or five churches we went to, all of which were pretty impressive, and the old and new town halls that can be found in the city center. We went to the top of the tower in the Frauenkirche and looked over the town. In our extended walking, we found a lot of monuments, gates, and little parks.
It is with much sadness that I mention that I have less than two weeks to spend in Vienna before I go home. I also wish I didn't have as much homework as I do so that I could actually enjoy it a bit more fully. There's still a few things I really want to see and many more that I would if I had the time. I only hope my suitcases are big enough to hold all the chocolate I'll be bringing back.

patrick, as always, a great selection of photos. nice mixture of scenery, statuary, and strangeness. the statue of the angel of death over a doorway was quite interesting. what did the door lead to? i hope the final days of your stay go well. dad
