! These average looking peppers turned out to be some of the hottest you can buy in Peru and we had used far too many of them! With the help of plenty water and Coke we managed to finish most of it. The next morning we were up very early (2.30am) to get the tour bus to go see the canyon. It took 5 hours to go there so we slept most of the way. The views were incredible on the way and we were really looking forward to seeing the canyon. When we eventually got there, we were very disappointed. Since we had already been to see the Grand Canyon in America a few years ago, we were expecting to see something similar only deeper. This Canyon was just an over rated valley. It had slanted sides with lots of vegetation on it. There was a river at the bottom that you could just about make out but all in all it wasnīt the big attraction we were expecting. We heard people have trekked down into the Canyon and stayed with local people before trekking back out which would be cool but the one day trip to the look out point was not for us. The next day, we got a bus to Puno to see the floating Islands.
Our first stop in Peru was a small city called Arequipa. We came here because it is close to the deepest canyon in the world at 4,160mts (twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA). We were too late to book the tour for the canyon on the day we arrived so we decided to take a walk around the city center. The main square was surprisingly modern. We were already seeing the difference in the countries standards compared to what we saw in Bolivia. We visited a museum off the main square which houses a mummy of a young girl that was found in 1995 on the edge of a volcano. She was sacrificed nearly 500 years ago by the Incaīs. This sacrifice was supposed to please the Pacha Mamma (mother earth) and bring good fortune to the people. The Incaīs believed in a number of Gods which were all natural such as; The Sun, the Moon, The Mountains, The Water etc. We hadnīt cooked for ourselves in awhile so we decided to get something in the local supermarket and cook it back in the hostel. Patrice wanted to add abit of spice to the dinner so she picked out a few average looking peppers.
