We breakfasted at Absaroka Lodge, urging V.V to try their sausage gravy and biscuits. She still was not impressed. Later we took off for Cody, where we shopped and ate lunch. V.V. is running out of money and suitcase space due to the many gifts for grandson Jordan. Jordan will be able to play Cowboys and Indians for years to come.
Back to the lodge, where we gathered for a dinner horseback ride. After mounting our respective horses, we started off in single file to the back of the canyon, headed by an enthusiastic border collie named Cedar. There were 11 of us all together, including our young wrangler from Mississippi named Austin, 9 lodge guests including the 3 of us, and the crusty old father of the lodge owner, who happened to be a retired vet. We went up and down hills, crossed streams and traversed hillsides. It was not a walk in the park! Pat rode Ike, V.V. was on Lady, and Denice rode Elvis, who true to his namesake, hummed for most of the trip. We arrived at our dinner destination where we ate steak, beans, potatoes, garlic bread, and strawberry shortcake.
On the trip back our wrangler was pointing out bear signs and Cedar, our guide dog, frequently ran ahead barking. Upon arrival at the corral, we were met by the frantic owner, who told us to STOP, there was a bear close. He yelled for the dog to come, and the dog took off barking, to scare off the bear. At the same time, the pack mule spooked and dragged the owner around the corner of the barn. Denice spotted the bear running from the creek bed next to the barn, and the wrangler took off after the mule which was halfway up the side of the canyon. The owner then yelled to us to dismount as the horses were spooking and we all got off in record time. Pat got squashed between two horses as they milled around. At that point we all saw the bear making its way across the hillside, back into the back of the canyon. He was a big silverback grizzly and we all took pictures. The bear came back to the lodge two more times that night and even the lodge employees were nervous. The father of the owner said he was surprised no one was hurt during the incident. We thanked him for arranging the evening's excitement and capped off the night with a bottle of wine and another game of UNO.
