Hawaii (The Big Island), Hawaii
Entry 5 of 7 | show all | print this entry |

We landed on the big island, very hot and humid!! Drove around to Kona on the west coast and stayed in a hotel overlooking the beach for one night. The next morning we went snorkelling and saw a huge green sea turtle feeding in the shallows. Then drove back around to Hilo through The Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park. There are sections of the old highway that were cut off by lava flows in the 80's. We stayed at Arnott's Lodge in Hilo where we did a lava walk. Originally we thought about 4 hours, it turned out to be a 10 hour round trip, over an old very sharp lava field. We climbed up the side of Kiluea Caldera to where the lava "breakouts" occur and the lava runs out at 2000 degrees F towards the ocean. The lava pouring into the ocean once it got dark was pretty amazing. We walked back in the dark with our guide by torchlight which was a bit scary!
