i-to-i teaching in Jaipur
Entry 7 of 25 | show all | print this entry |
We have to be up for 7.15 today to mett Karnika and then be taken to our schools. Karnika is very nice and speaks very good english, which makes it very easy to understand her.She takes us through an induction pack and then tells us about our projects. I will be teaching i a slum primary school from 8.30am until 12,00pm and the others are teaching or looking after children at different schools from 7.30/9ish until 11.30/1.30ish, so we all have lunch together and the afternoon off. Karnika takes me to the school and one of the teachers and a pupil come to meet me outside the slum and lead me to the classroom. The 'school' is just 2 rooms, the front room holds 2classes - 1st and 2nd and the back room holds one class - 3rd.
Class 1 is very small children and older children who are slow learners or new to school.
Class 2 are 4-5 children who are 10ish and are better than class 1, but not quite good enough for class 3 yet.
Class 3 is older kids and small kids who are bright. Their english &maths is much better than the other classes, but it is still not brilliant. When they get too good for class 3 the children move onto Sabode, a elementry school which is housed in a private school in the afternoons when they don't use it. I should be based there, but Karnika placed me in the slum school so that i worked the same hours as the others in the guest house.
There are 2 teachers, the slightly older lady teaches the more advanced children and her english is ok, the younger teacher (about 30ish) teaches the very young children and doesn't speak english. The older teacher invites me into the school and askes me to 'teach english and maths' to the class 2. AHHHHHH how do i start? I tell them my name and how old i am and where i am from. I then ask the, the same question. Their english is worse than i expected as everyone i have met so far has good english picked up from tourists. They do know words by heart, but they can't always spell them and they don't know the alphabet unless you start with A. After an hour i change to maths and put some addition on the board. They seem to know this, but soon find that only 1 of the children is doing the work and the others are copying from him! At 10.15 the other children all put their books away and disapear so i figure it is break time. The teachers invite me to sit with them in the back classroom and they eat some chapati's and sauce of come kind. Must remember to bring some biscuits in tomorrow.
After break, about 11ish i am aked to teach english to the younger children in class1. I do the same introduction to them and before i know it my rickh\shaw man is here and i am heading home. I spend the afternoon at the guest house reading/writing etc and about 5 we all decide to go out to The Rock for a beer. Luckly Heather knows where it is and it's only a 10mins walk away. It is nice to sit on the veranda away from the constant stares and questions. We all really enjoy sitting there and head back to the guest houseat 7.30pm for dinner. All in all it has been a good day.
