Quetzaltenango (Xela is an other name and is an abbreviation of the original name Xelaj˙) lies a few kilometers south of the Cuatro Caminos Junction. It is the second large town in Guatemala. Compared with Guatcity with 3.200.000 habitants and Xela only 100.000 it still is a very big difference.  I took a bus but not the chicken bus because that would have cost me 35 Q and the luxury bus was only 55 Q: so for the price I had a comfortable nice trip of 4,5 hours.

It's in Zona 1 where I am hosted. It is in this Zona downtown where most of its important monuments and tourists services are located.

Philip picked me up at the bus station so I had a nice arrival, at parque calvario and I am enjoying my first days in the highlands.

My first job was to understand the map. Avenidas run roughly north-south and calles run east-west. So first I had to check the Zona and than for the Avenida and Calles. Easy, ones you understand the system.

Quetzaltenango is also well known for its language schools.
Because I stayed more than two weeks I decided to check out these schools. I already noticed that I had a big language barrier and the one-year school in Belgium was not enough to make conversation easy.

For 125 dollar I subscribed to a private school. That means 5 days at 5 hours a day with a private teacher.

We started at 8 o'clock every morning. It was very intense and pretty good as well.

So every afternoon I could walkabout in town.
And what I saw that day was incredible.

I had already seen a lot of poverty but there is one story that I want to share with you. I was with an Australian friend Tash, and we bought some street food on the Parque Calvario. Off course we had a little bit too much. We decided to put it down for the street dogs because there are a lot of them. But it was a child (probably about 10 years old) who took the food. We were dumb beaten.
