June 29, 2008 - Spent most of the weekend in Novo Hamburgo, "the city of shoes." It's a nice little town, nothing great or unusual with the exception that a lot of people work in the business of shoes. So what did I do ... churrasco (Brazilian BBQ), TV, soccer, more churrasco... yeah, that was pretty much it.
On Saturday night everyone finally decided to get out. Everyone wanted to go bowling, so where does the American end up ... where else, but to a joint called "American Bowling." LOL ... This place had American decor out the wazo. Pictures of famous actors and actresses on all the walls, race cars, guitars, Indians. The cool thing was that I actually knew all the drinks on the menu. They actually had a bloody mary on the menu. I ordered a bloody mary. Guess what, they didn't have a bloody mary. They either didn't have it or couldn't make it. No one really orders it and drinking Budweiser was not my fair. I ended up with that very "American" beer Heineken.
For the musicians out there, there was a band playing what else, "American rock" songs. It was just two guys, one with a guitar and one with a keyboard and a computer, and he wasn't really playing the keyboard much either. He was really pushing buttons. They were tracking everything from the computer. It was equivalent to watching two people play the game Rock Band, only the lead singer wasn't half bad. Everyone loved it. I, of course, was wondering how much money they were getting paid for this gig and why.
All in all, I had a blast. Spent some time with the most adorable 2 year old. I was fascinated in how she understood more portuguese than I. While watching cartoons (in portuguese) together, I soon realized my portuguese level. Yep, and Andressa is ahead of me. Now my goal is to one day hear and speak as well as a five year old. ... One day ...
