Well, it's 10.00 on the morning of our grand departure. We've just about crammed everything into our rucksacks - Richard is already regretting not buying the 95litre version!! - downloaded as many tunes as possible to the iPods, charged the battery camera, downloaded the honeymoon photos (finally), had final injections - so we're almost ready to set off.

We've had our final dinner at home, washed down by a glass of champers, and are really looking forward to our first Argentine steak on Tuesday night - mmmmm, our tastebuds are tingling at the thought of it!!

We've been really touched by our friends, especially Duncan, Suzy & Stuee who managed to fool us into thinking we were celebrating Duncan's birthday on Saturday night, when in fact it was all a rouse as they'd been planning a suprise going away dinner for us. Thanks very much - we had an amazing night. Unfortunately we turned up a bit late as I decided that just as we were about to leave, we should try to book the Inca Trail trek to Macchu Picchu. I'd seen earlier that you're supposed to book this trek 3-6 months in advance and as we're hoping to do it in about 6 weeks, I thought it was important to act immediately!! Annoyingly I was right because the proper Inca trek is fully booked until July! We'll have to take an alternative route, several of which are opening up apparently.

We're both feeling very very excited and also quite nervous about leaving tonight. Richard is trying to work out if he'll be able to squeeze in one final run - are you mad?? - whilst I'm having a considerably more leisurely day.

Next time you hear from us, we'll be half way around the world. Out of sight, but hopefully not out of mind.

Lots of love,

Carmen & Pablo xxx

Have the best time!!
final tips from Ruth who has been round South america:
1/ Don't keep all your credit cards together and always keep your passport on you in your moneybelt at all times.
2/ don't take anything you're worried about losing (i.e. ipods/mobiles etc) because cleaners/locals in the hostels will nick them if you don't have them on you. (even if they're locked away in a rucksack!)
3/ Carry your stuff during the day in a rucksack/daybag on your front.
4/ Most importantly - enjoy yourselves and don't worry too much about safety etc. You've prob been more at risk working on Oxford Street for the past few years!! ;-)

adios amigos and see you in a few months.............
