So here it is just 9 days to go and Gayle has had a practice rucksack packing session tonight. And man was the pack heavy, some 14 kilos I'm informed. I'm rapidly rethinking my list of items to take, although the fact I won't need 8kg of moisturizer is a positive sign... Thankfully the laptop debate is well and truly over, so that saves a good 3kg more - it seems the only person who thought taking a laptop was a good idea was, well me. Thanks for the free and plentiful advice everyone :o)

On the subject of laptops we've replaced the dead model - and I'm typing on the brand new one right now whilst watching england capitulate in the first test against NZ and downloading loads of our favourite CDs through itunes ready to load our ipods.

Out itinerary continues to take shape nicely, most recent development is to have confirmed our first couple of nights' accommodation in Santiago in early April.

We're both enjoying the build up more and more as each day passes, so many exciting trips and sights await us - the anticipation is excruciating. With the first 3-4 weeks mapped out already, reading in the last week about our 7-day hiking itinerary in Patagonia, exploring the coastal resorts and wine regions of Chile, traversing the Bolivian Salt Flats for four days in a 4x4, stargazing in the Atacama Desert, navigating Lake Titicaca at 3800m above sea level and staying with an island family and then following the Inca trail to Macchu Piccu has left us hungry with desire to get on with it. And still there's research to be done on Ecuador and Brazil, decisions to be taken about flying to Bariloche in Argentina for the start of the skiing season in late May/early June and just how many nights do we want to party in Rio as our trip climax? As the recycling advert so aptly states, "...the possibilities are endless".

Essential last minute purchases are in abundance. For me a lightweight jacket and water bottle today, for Gayle 2 diarrhoea kits and a new mobile 'phone...! Somehow she seems far more prepared...

Anyway, I suspect there will be one last blog before we head off. For now I hope you're getting a taste (however bitter it might be for some) of our excitement, and enjoying sharing the anticipation....

Richie & Gayle xx
